Harvesting Info
Harvesting Wild Alaska Salmon
Purse Seining
Region:
- Southeastern, Central and Western Alaska up to the tip of the Alaska Peninsula
Equipment/Method:
- A purse seine is a net that is set in a circle around the school of fish, and then is drawn closed ("pursed") at the bottom
Catch:
- All species of salmon are harvested by this method
- Because salmon migrate in tight schools, it is not unusual for an Alaskan seiner to "wrap up" 250 to 1500 fish or more with one set
