Harvesting Wild Alaska Whitefish Varieties
Pot Fishing
Region:
- Pot fishing is conducted offshore throughout the Gulf of Alaska, the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands
Equipment/Method:
- Pots are large steel-framed cages covered in mesh
- The baited pots are placed on the seafloor where they trap crab and fish
- Crab and fish enter the traps through tunnels but cannot escape
- Later the pots are retrieved and the fish and crab are sorted on deck – undesired species, small fishes, undersized crabs and female crabs are returned to the sea alive
Catch:
- Pots are the only legal gear for King, Snow, and Dungeness crab
- Pots are used to harvest some finfish, including black cod and Pacific cod
