  • Longlining is conducted offshore throughout the Gulf of Alaska, the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands
  • It also occurs inshore in Southeast Alaska


  • Longline gear is composed of groundline, buoy lines, and gangions (short pieces of line with hooks on the end)
  • Longlines are set along the seabed, with baited hooks every few yards
  • longline hooks are handled one at a time


  • The only legal fishing method for halibut is longline gear
  • Often used for harvesting black cod and Pacific cod
