Longlining
Region:
- Longlining is conducted offshore throughout the Gulf of Alaska, the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands
- It also occurs inshore in Southeast Alaska
Equipment/Method:
- Longline gear is composed of groundline, buoy lines, and gangions (short pieces of line with hooks on the end)
- Longlines are set along the seabed, with baited hooks every few yards
- longline hooks are handled one at a time
Catch:
- The only legal fishing method for halibut is longline gear
- Often used for harvesting black cod and Pacific cod
