Harvesting Wild Alaska Salmon

Purse Seining

  • Southeastern, Central and Western Alaska up to the tip of the Alaska Peninsula

  • A purse seine is a net that is set in a circle around the school of fish, and then is drawn closed ("pursed") at the bottom

  • All species of salmon are harvested by this method
  • Because salmon migrate in tight schools, it is not unusual for an Alaskan seiner to "wrap up" 250 to 1500 fish or more with one set
